Tamarind Paste is a tamarind concentrate made from the fruit of the tamarind tree. Use it to add a sour and tart flavor to chutneys, curries, sauces, stir fries, and noodle dishes like pad thai.

What is Tamarind?

Tamarind is a tangy, tropical, nutrient-rich fruit native to Africa which has been widely cultivated in Asia and the tropics of the Americas, primarily in Mexico and the Caribbean. If you're fortunate, you may come across tamarind in the pod when shopping for Southeast Asian, Indian, or Latin American ingredients.

In the pod, the fruit is most often sold ripened, although you may also find unripened tamarind too. While the unripened fruit is intensely sour, the ripened fruit is sticky and sweetly sour, creating a burst of intense flavors when you suck the fruit right off the seed after peeling away the brown skin. I think of it like nature's fruit leather.

Cooking with Tamarind Paste

Tamarind is an essential part of Indian, South Asian, and Latin American cuisines. It gets transformed into chutneys, stirred into marinades, and turned into delectable rasams (a kind of South Indian spicy soup). When recipes call for tamarind, they'll sometimes require rehydrating dry tamarind pulp or even peeling and pulverizing the fresh fruit.

Perhaps its most accessible, convenient to use form is as Tamarind Paste. 

Tamarind Paste is an easy-to-use tamarind concentrate made from the fruit of the tamarind tree. These beanlike pods contain a dark brown fibrous, sticky pulp that becomes sweeter as it ripens. Our tamarind paste is a puree made with less ripe pods, making it perfect for adding a sour and tart punch to chutneys, curries, sambhars, marinades, stir-fries, and noodle dishes like pad thai. Just use it straight from the jar, no extra work needed!

Other brands of tamarind concentrate are frequently watered down and mixed with preservatives and pickling agents like sodium benzoate and citric acid. Not ours! We are proud to provide you with 100% pure tamarind puree with absolutely nothing else added.

The sour taste in tamarind comes from tartaric acid. The acidity means that tamarind can be used much like citrus in cooking. In India, it’s used to add sourness to curries. In Thai or Chinese cuisine, it’s added to hot-and-sour soups. In the Middle East, it’s used to make many refreshing summer drinks, or simply eaten raw.  











Tamarind Dressing

  • 1-1/2 TBSP cumin seeds
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt or coconut cream
  • 3 TBSP fresh lemon juice
  • 3 TBSP honey
  • 3 TBSP extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1/8 cup tamarind concentrate
  • 1-1/2 TBSP fresh ginger, minced

In a dry skillet, roast cumin seeds until aromatic. Whisk together cumin seeds and all other ingredients in a bowl. Toss with veggies, such as cabbage, bean sprouts, carrots, cucumbers, and green onions.

Other Ideas

  • Add a spoonful to any chili, curry, or dal for a rich and sour sweetness.
  • Tamarind pairs perfectly with chocolate and warm spices like cinnamon and ginger. Try it in your next chocolate or gingerbread cake.
  • Thin with milk, sweeten with sugar, then use as a glaze on banana bread.
  • Mix a couple teaspoons with lemon juice, ginger-infused simple syrup, and water to make lemonade.
  • Add it to a whiskey sour with ginger simple syrup. Garnish with mint or orange.
  • Toss roasted vegetables from the oven with tamarind concentrate thinned with water or stock, then return to oven for 5-8 more minutes for a final crisp.

USA:
On average, 5-10 business days.
Canada: On average, 6-10 business days, but sometimes longer to get through customs.
International: We do not have an estimated time for other countries.


INTERNATIONAL ORDERS:
International orders outside the USA may attract additional customs, taxes and duties upon entry to your country; this is the responsibility of the customer. If the package is refused by your country's customs department and it it sent back to us, the shipping cost will be non-refundable. Please be aware, there may be delays.

DO YOU OFFER LOCAL PICK UP?
We are online-only.

We want our customers to be satisfied with the quality of our products. If a product is damaged during shipping or you are unhappy with the product, simply let us know within 14 days after delivery, and we will try to resolve the situation to your satisfaction in a way that is fair to both parties. We are a small company and try to do our best for each situation. Please contact us if you have any questions prior to purchasing.

NOT SATISFIED?

If you receive the order and you are not satisfied with it, you can return the merchandise in original packaging within 14 days along with the receipt. Once we receive your package, we will refund the amount charged of the items returned. Unfortunately, we cannot refund the shipping costs, unless the product is damaged or defective.

ORDER REFUSED

If you refuse the order or if the carrier was not able to deliver it, we will give full refund less the shipping charges.

INCORRECT ADDRESS

If the shipping address that you supply is found to be incomplete or incorrect then you are responsible for the additional charges imposed by the shipping company for correcting the address.

RETURNED TO SENDER / UNDELIVERABLE

If we send you a shipment and it gets returned back to us as it was undeliverable to the address provided, we will refund the amount you had paid for the products only. Unfortunately, we cannot refund the shipping cost. We offer the option to reship the same order to an alternative address for an additional shipping fee.
